Viridisol® M : 2- Methyl Tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF)

Viridisol® M (2-MeTHF) is a bio-based solvent that is recognized as the most favorable of ether solvents.  The relatively high boiling point (80˚C) and low melting point (-137˚C) provide a broad temperature range for a myriad of processing conditions.

Viridisol® M has a favorable azeotrope with water providing easy options for recycling due to its low (4%) water solubility. This also eliminates the need for an extraction solvent during process work up, as Viridisol® M separates cleanly from water, allowing for easy recovery to an anhydrous form for recycle, all of which minimizes production costs and reduces waste.

Viridisol® M has an enhanced stability in the presence of a strong base such as organolithium and is known to stabilize organometallic reagents in hydrocarbon solvents.

Toxicity studies have demonstrated Viridisol® M (2-MeTHF) to possess low genotoxicity.

Viridisol® M has been demonstrated to increase process yields in certain chemical reactions, particularly Grignard Chemistry.

All of these characteristics make it an excellent substitute for Tetrahydrofuran (THF).

Viridisol® T : Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol (THFA)

Viridisol® T (THFA) is a bio-based water-miscible solvent with low odor, vapor pressure, and evaporation rate. This very biodegradable solvent is EPA approved for pre and post-harvest applications. In addition to being FEMA GRAS, the solvent is also non-HAP. These properties make Viridisol® T a preferred solvent in agricultural, cleaning, coating, and paint formulations. The primary alcohol functionality is easily derivitized to reactive monomers, such as acrylates, which can be incorporated into resins. Viridisol® T can also be derivatized with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide to prepare ethoxylate/propoxylate compounds for use in surfactant applications.

Viridisol® F (Furan) possesses a unique structure making it suitable for numerous synthetic transformations. Due to its aromatic character, Viridisol® F can react with electrophiles to generate 2-substituted furan derivatives, some of which are intermediates in API drug manufacturing. As an electron-rich diene, Viridisol® F can participate in Diels-Alder reactions with dienophiles to prepare oxabicycloheptene structures. The Diels-Alder adducts can be incorporation into smart coatings, in which retro-Diels-Alder leads to the unique properties. Certain Diels-Alder adducts can be further transformed to compounds which exhibit biocidal activity.
